Menurut Organisasi Kesehatan Dunia, WHO, setiap tahun jumlah penderita kanker di dunia bertambah 6,25 juta orang. Dalam 10 tahun mendatang diperkirakan 9 juta orang akan meninggal setiap tahun akibat kanker. Dua pertiga dari penderita kanker di dunia akan berada di negara-negara yang sedang berkembang.

Di Indonesia diperkirakan setiap tahunnya terdapat 100 penderita kanker yang baru dari setiap 100.000 penduduk. Menurut hasil Survai Kesehatan Rumah Tangga (SKRT) Departemen Kesehatan RI, kematian yang disebabkan kanker meningkat dari tahun ke tahun ialah : 4,5 %0 (1989), 4,5 %0 (1992), dan 4,9 %0 (1995).
